The Vermont Housing Data website, also known as HousingData.org, provides Vermonters with tools for making more informed decisions about affordable housing. HousingData.org is the premier place to find high quality data and research about Vermont’s housing landscape. The site has three sections:
- Community Data Profiles: data about Vermont’s housing market, available at the town, county, and state level;
- Housing Resource Toolbox: strategies and best practices to support affordable housing in every Vermont community;
- Directory of Affordable Rental Housing (DoARH): a listing of the subsidized rental apartments in Vermont.
Community Data Profiles
Since 2003, VHFA has maintained the site’s Community Data Profiles as the premier source for high-quality data about the residents and homes in every Vermont town. Datasets are vetted and analyzed by VHFA to improve public access to high-quality housing data for all Vermonters. All information presented on the site is available to the public for free and is available for download. Metrics on the site are broken down into the following categories:
- Community Snapshot
- Population & Households
- Housing Stock
- Homeowners
- Renters
- Housing Needs
Each visualization on the site contains a description of its content and a source for the data. The data within the “Community Profiles” was used as the basis of the 2025-2029 Vermont Statewide Housing Needs Assessment.
Housing Resource Toolbox
The site's ever-growing “Housing Resource Toolbox” provides resources and best practices to municipal decision-makers and community members to help with planning and developing local housing policy. This toolbox contains:
- First steps to understanding local housing advocacy;
- information to help communities assess their housing needs;
- tips for starting and enhancing housing committees;
- local and national housing policy recommendations; and
- links to other state housing resources, such as Zoning For Great Neighborhoods.
The Housing Resource Toolbox is intended to stimulate community conversations, support local leadership, and enable policy change, as needed, to increase inclusive, fair, and affordable housing.
Directory of Affordable Rental Housing (DOARH)
The Directory of Affordable Rental Housing (DoARH) contains a real-time directory of all Vermont apartments with rents made affordable by public, project-based subsidies. A list of these apartments maintained by housing managers of the subsidized rental stock provides key information about the state of Vermont’s affordable rental housing market.
Within the Directory, site visitors can find information about the subsidized housing stock, with the ability to filter results by location, subsidy type, and building characteristics. To find out more information about a specific property, including how to apply or current vacancy/waitlists, please contact the property manager or organization listed within a property’s individual page.
In addition to administering its core home purchase and rental financing programs, Vermont Housing Finance Agency (VHFA) maintains HousingData.org through its department of Research & Community Relations. VHFA maintains HousingData.org as the site is regularly used by partners and advocates to promote affordable, safe housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income Vermonters, in close alignment with the agency’s mission.
The site, originally created in 2003, has been maintained by VHFA with additional support from AARP-Vermont, TD Foundation, the Vermont Community Development Program and the Vermont Association of Planning and Development Agencies (VAPDA). The Housing-Ready Toolbox was created through a partnership of The Fair Housing Project of CVOEO’s Thriving Communities initiative, the Vermont Department of Housing & Community Development, and Vermont Housing Finance Agency.
